Description
This historic 3-bedroom (10 rooms total) rock house is located in east Cochise Stronghold, within the homeland of the famed Chiricahua Apache chief. Set in the spectacularly scenic Dragoon Mountains, guests enjoy views of Rockfellow Dome, and the house is close to excellent hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding opportunities.
The cabin is suitable for groups of up to 10 people. Pets are allowed. No more than 6 horses/mules are permitted in the corrals. You must supply the feed for the horses and it must be certified weed free. Please clean up after all your animals.Off road vehicle users, recognize your role in protecting the wild lands surrounding the Shaw House. Please comply with all regulations applicable to your vehicle. . Please tread lightly and stay on designated roads complying with regulations applicable to your vehicle. The house has electricity and running water. Inside the cabin there are electric lights, an electric stove/oven, a microwave, and a refrigerator. The house has two bathrooms, one with a bathtub and the other with a shower. There is a separate dining room with a table and seating for six. The living room contains three couches and several end tables. The house is furnished with a queen-size bed in the master bedroom (along with fire wood box), two bunk beds in the second bedroom and a double-futon in the third bedroom. Kitchen supplies include pots, pans, utensils, dishes, coffeepot, and can opener. On the grounds is a propane grill and outdoor furniture. The cabin also has a screened-in porch. The Shaw House is located approximately 10 miles west of Sunsites, Arizona. Attractions in the area include: Chiricahua National Monument, Fort Bowie National Historic Site, the Willcox Playa, and the Amerind Foundation.
Supplies you need to bring: Sheets, blankets (or sleeping bags) for one queen bed, three double futons and two single beds, pillows, flashlights, towels, garbage bags, warm clothes, dish-washing liquid, dish towels. Bring an ax for splitting firewood and matches and newspaper for the woodstoves. Cell phone coverage in this area can be fair. Pack out all food and trash when checking out of cabin. A cabin manual is located inside of the cabin to answer cabin-specific questions during your stay as well as provide you with area recreational information. Cabin has no phone.
Access to the Shaw House is through a locked gate. The gate has a combination lock, and a house key is located in a lock box on the back door. The combinations for the gate and the lock box are given out once a reservation is made.
Site access is moderate.

The Shaw House can be reserved 180 days in advance.
There are beds for 10 people in the cabin. No linens or bedding provided.
Roads leading into this cabin are passable by passenger car, but high clearance vehicles are recommended.
Pets are permitted in the cabin, but renters must clean-up after their pets.
Fireworks are always prohibited on all national forest lands.
All smoking must be done within enclosed vehicles or outside where the area is cleared of all flammable material.
The house is located in a desert environment, please be aware that scorpions, snakes and other insects may be present at any time.
Off-highway vehicles are also only allowed on designated roads and trails.

From Tucson, take I-10 east to Exit #318 (Dragoon Road).
Turn right onto Dragoon Road for approximately 10 miles to the Cochise Stronghold Road.
Turn right on Cochise Stronghold Road for approximately 6 miles to Ironwood Road (the paved road dead ends at Ironwood Road).
Turn right for approximately 4 miles.
The Shaw House is the large rock house (with a rock garage) located off to the left of Ironwood Road behind a locked gate.
