Description

This Forest Service historic site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is located within 1 1/2 hours of Tucson, Sierra Vista, and Nogales, Arizona, in the Santa Rita Mountains near Sonoita, Arizona, in the Coronado National Forest. This area is rich in gold mining and ranching history. The cabin has electricity. There is no running water in the cabin, but it does have an outdoor sink, a vault toilet and a shower stall (for solar showers). The kitchen has basic amenities including a small refrigerator, a microwave, a hot plate, coffee pot, dishes, utensils, cookware, and a table and four chairs. Outside, there is a grill and picnic table. The cabin has propane heat. The maximum capacity for the cabin is five people. There are four beds in the cabin, two twin beds and a set of bunk beds. A small loveseat turns into a single bed. No linens or bedding are provided. The headquarters building is for day-use only. This building also has electricity, but no indoor plumbing. There is an outdoor sink, a vault toilet and a shower stall (for solar showers). There is a small kitchenette that contains a refrigerator, a microwave, a coffee pot, crockpot, dishes, utensils, and some cookware. The headquarters building has no heat. The maximum capacity for the headquarters building is 50 people. The amenities in this building include tables and chairs, couches, rocking chairs, and a large wrap-around porch with four Adirondack chairs. Outside there is a charcoal grill and two picnic tables. This building is available for meetings, retreats, weddings, or family reunions. Kentucky Camp is located approximately 10 miles from Sonoita, Arizona. The Arizona Trail is routed through Kentucky Camp, so hiking and mountain biking opportunities are numerous. There are numerous roads around Kentucky Camp available for off-highway vehicle travel. However, off-highway vehicles may not be ridden within the boundaries of Kentucky Camp. All smoking must be done within enclosed vehicles or outside where the area is cleared of all flammable material.

If you would like the cabin only, please enter 5 or less when prompted for # of occupants. The Day Use Headquartes is not reservable on its own. If you would like to reserve the day use, please enter 6 or more people when prompted for the # of occupants, your reservation will include the cabin and the Headquarters. This facility is both the Overnight Cabin and the Day Use Headquarters Building. You are not allowed to camp within the site boundary of Kentucky Camp. However, there are numerous dispersed camping areas outside the gates. The Cabin accommodates up to 5 people and the day use up to 50 people. The headquarters building day use is not reservable on its own. If you would like to reserve the day use, please enter 6 or more people when prompted for the # of occupants. 2 night minimum stay. Reservation dates subject to weather conditions. Kentucky Camp cabin and the headquarters building can be reserved 180 days in advance. There are beds for 5 people in the cabin. No linens or bedding provided. The headquarters building is for day-use only Roads leading into this cabin are passable by passenger car, but high clearance vehicles are recommended. Pets are permitted in the cabin, but renters must clean-up after their pets Fireworks are always prohibited on all national forest lands. Off-highway vehicles are also only allowed on designated roads and trails.

From Tucson, take I-10 east to Exit #281 (Highway 83 Sonoita/Patagonia) Go south on Highway 83 for approximately 21 miles to the Gardner Canyon Road. Turn right on Gardner Canyon Road and go .75 miles to Forest Road 163. Turn right on 163 and continue approximately 5 miles to the junction of 163 and the entrance to Kentucky Camp. Stay to the left and there is a parking lot and gate that marks the entrance to Kentucky Camp. There are signs to Kentucky Camp from Highway 83.
