HONKER LAKE CABIN

Description

Cabin is a 12' X 12' precut cedar log cabin equipped with wooden bunks (sleeping space for 4-6 people), table, benches, wood stove for heat, and an outside toilet. It does not have mattresses or cooking utensils. Cabin users should bring their own sleeping bags, pads, cook stoves, matches, cooking gear, food, lantern, toilet paper, and garbage bags. A boat with oars is provided (boat uses a long shaft motor - not provided). Wood supply cannot be guaranteed. Please be conservative with wood use and bring a cook stove for cooking.

Honker Lake is sometimes referred to as Galea Lake. The cabin is remote and isolated. Waterfowl is abundant, especially the Canada goose or honker,which the cabin is named for. There is good fishing in the lake with cutthroat, rainbow, and dolly varden, as well as coho and sockeye salmon. The ground is flat along Honker Lake. The cabin is situated in an old growth area of Sitka spruce and western hemlock.

Ketchikan/Thorne Bay AK

Approximately 54 air miles from Ketchikan, Alaska, and 27 miles from the City of Craig on Prince of Wales Island. The cabin is located along Honker Divide Canoe Route, on Honker Lake, which runs from the Hatchery Creek Bridge (FDR #30) to Thorne Bay. The cabin is 6 miles from the bridge. It is a very difficult paddle from the bridge to the cabin with mostly upstream paddling conditions and lots of portage. The cabin is more often accessed by floatplane. Refer to USGS map Craig D-3.
