Description

Camping Reservations
Description: Built in 1964, this 16' x 16' A-frame cabin sleeps 7 people with 2 single bunks (1 with trundle) and a second floor loft. The cabin also has a table with benches, woodstove, woodshed (wood provided), splitting maul, broom, and an outhouse. The partially covered covered front porch has a bear-proof storage locker for food storage. The cabin has no phone access, and no mattresses or cooking utensils. Cabin users should bring sleeping bags, pads, cookstove, cooking gear, and food. Trail: The trail leading from the cabin to Garnet Ledge is not maintained due to recent windfall near the cabin. Proximity: The surrounding rainforest is primarily Sitka spruce and western hemlock. The immediate area around the cabin is flat, while the backdrop is a moderately steep slope. The cabin overlooks the Sitkine River delta and tidal flats. The special attraction of this site is the garnet bedrock outcropping located nearby. The garnet ledge is non commercial and is on private land owned by the Presbyterian Church in Wrangell. Only children can collect garnets at the ledge. For more information on garnets, write: Presbyterian Church 220 Church Street. Wrangell, AK 99929 or call: 907-874-3534 Wildlife: Bald eagles, sea lions, harbor seals, and various gulls (in spring); brown and black bears and moose inhabit the area. Alaska's second largest concentration of bald eagles occurs during the April hooligan (eulachon) run at the mouth of the Sitkine River.
