Description

Built in 1963, this 16' x 16' A-Frame cabin has a sleeping capacity of 7 people with 2 single bunks (1 with trundle) and a second floor loft. The cabin also has a table and benches, broom, oil space heater (#1 oil only), and an outhouse. There is a partially covered front porch with a built-in bench and a wooden cooler box for food storage. The cabin has no (Replace with bear-proof storage locker for food) mattresses or cooking utensils. Cabin users should bring sleeping bags, pads, cookstove, cooking gear, utensils, food, and #1 stove oil for the space heater. The cabin has no phone access. The cabin sits among a stand of spruce trees on the bank of the Stikine River, and offers a view up the River towards the US-Canada border. The immediate area in front of the cabin is moderately steep. The backdrop of this area is steep granite rock faces. The surrounding rainforest is primarily Sitka spruce and western hemlock. Cottonwood is found extensively along the river's edge throughout the valley. Brown and black bear, goat, and moose inhabit the area.

Located on the south shore of the Stikine River, 2 miles downriver from the US-Canada border near Red Slough, within the Stikine-LeConte Wilderness.Distance from Wrangell is 22 miles by floatplane or 32 miles by shallow (Remove 22 miles by floatplane) draft boat. Low river levels affect access. The river level at the U.S.G.S. Gage is posted online at www.usgs.gov. Tides affect access to the cabin; consult local tide tables. A tide of 14 feet or higher is required for shallow draft boats to cross the tide flats. The river is normally ice-free May to October. Check local conditions before you go.
