Description
The Devil's Elbow Cabin is located on a narrow isthmus on Kuiu Island in Rocky Pass, in Keku Strait, between Kuiu and Kupreanof Island. It is near the Devils Elbow, the sharp turn in Rocky Pass for which the cabin is named. The cabin is accessible by boat or floatplane only. This is NOT the Devil's Pass Cabin near the Resurrection Pass Trail in the Chugach National Forest. This is an A-frame cabin with 2 double bunks and a sleeping loft, table, benches, oil heater, and an outhouse. It has no mattresses, cookstove, or cooking utensils. Cabin users should bring slepeing bags and pads, cookstove, cooking gear, food, and #1 heating oil. A small creek 1/4 mile south of the cabin is the nearest water source. The cabin is surrounded by tide flats for several miles to the south. It is situated along a major waterfowl resting area, making the spot a favorite of hunters. Kayakers and canoeists often find this cabin a welcome haven from inclement weather. Rocky Pass is known for its interesting geology. Popular activities include hunting, nature photography, rockhounding, kayaking, fishing for Coho salmon in August and and September, and wildlife viewing. In addition to waterfowl, visitors may see grouse, seals, black bears, and wolves. For more information on the Devil's Elbow Cabin, please call the Petersburg Ranger District at 907-772-3871.
