Description
The Castle River Cabin is located inside a large tide flat on Kupreanof Island at the mouth of Castle River, on the west side of Duncan Canal. It is accessible by boat or floatplane only. From Petersburg, it is 16 miles by floatplane, or 30 miles by boat. The Castle River Cabin is a modified A-Frame cabin equipped with two double bunks and a sleeping loft, table, benches, oil stove, and an outhouse. A trail leads 1/2 mile upstream to a rowboat, or 1/2 mile downstream to the Castle Flats Cabin. The surrounding terrain is predominantly flat to rolling old growth forest and muskeg. Activities: Fishing, hunting, wildlife viewing, boating, hiking. Wildlife: Moose, deer, black bear, waterfowl, grouse. The Castle River Cabin is located inside a large tide flat on Kupreanof Island, at the mouth of Castle River, on the west side of Duncan Canal. It is accessible by boat or floatplane only. From Petersburg, it is 16 miles by floatplane or 30 miles by boat. A 16' tide is required for direct boat or floatplane access to the cabin. At lower tides, there is up to a two mile hike across the tide flat to get to the cabin. Another option for access is to boat or fly to the Castle Flats Cabin (a 15' tide is required for floatplanes, or a 13' tide is required for boats) and hike the easy mile to the cabin. |
