Proximity: The surrounding terrain is predominantly flat, old-growth forest and muskeg. The nearest water source is a small stream west of the cabin. An easy one mile trail leads to the Castle River Cabin (1/2 mile) and continues upstream another 1/2 mile. Description: The Castle Flats Cabin is a hunter-style cabin equipped with four single wooden bunks, table, benches, wood stove and oil stove for heat, covered porch, rowboat, and an outhouse. It is located on Kupreanof Island, on the edge of the Castle River tide flat in Duncan Canal. It is accessible by boat and floatplane only. From Petersburg, it is 16 miles by floatplane or 30 miles by boat. Activities: Fishing, hiking, wildlife viewing, boating, hunting. Wildlife: Moose, deer, black bear, waterfowl, grouse. The Castle Flats Cabin is located on Kupreanof Island, on the edge of the Castle River tide flat in Duncan Canal. It is accessible by boat or floatplane only. From Petersburg, Alaska, it is 16 miles by floatplane or 30 miles by boat. A 15' tide is required for floatplane access, and a 13' tide is required for boat access. At lower tides, there is up to a two mile hike along the tide flat to the cabin. Map: The Castle Flats Cabin is found on USGS Topographic Map # Petersburg C-4.
